Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV)
Second Corinthians 9 teaches that giving is connected to the heart: “God loveth a cheerful giver.” Praise prepares that heart because gratitude recognises that what we possess is received, not self-created. Generosity becomes distorted when it is used to purchase approval, manipulate people or prove superiority. It can also become distorted in the opposite direction when fear makes a person hold everything tightly. Worship creates another possibility: stewardship with joy.
A generous person does not have to give foolishly. Wisdom asks where help is genuinely needed, whether the gift is sustainable and whether it is actually beneficial. You can give to a person, a family need, a church ministry, a kingdom assignment or another legitimate cause while still keeping necessary responsibilities in order. Acts 20:35 says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” That blessing is not merely financial. Giving breaks the inward circle in which everything is about “me, my needs, my plans, my comfort.” It teaches the heart to notice other people. Praise strengthens this because it keeps giving connected to grace. You are not trying to buy God's favour. You are responding to favour already received.
When you praise God for what He has placed in your hands, you may begin seeing opportunities that you previously overlooked: encouragement, hospitality, skills, time, knowledge, practical help or financial resources. Generosity then becomes larger than money. It becomes a way of saying, “Lord, what You have entrusted to me can become a blessing beyond me.” Proverbs 19:17 says, “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Scripture repeatedly connects generosity with God's concern for people. Praise makes generosity less transactional. You give because you have received mercy, not because you are trying to purchase an outcome.
Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it shall be given unto you.” This should not be reduced to a formula for getting rich. The broader teaching of Jesus consistently calls people toward liberality, mercy and freedom from greed. Second Corinthians 8:9 gives the deepest Christian model: “though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” Christ's self-giving becomes the pattern. Liberality can include money, but also time, knowledge, attention, encouragement and practical help. A skilled person can give expertise. A business owner can create honest value. A teacher can patiently explain. A neighbour can notice a need.
Wisdom remains necessary. Giving does not mean allowing manipulation. Cheerful generosity and healthy boundaries can coexist. Praise opens the hand because it reminds the heart that everything ultimately belongs to God. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof.” We are stewards. Give as God leads, with joy and wisdom, and let generosity become evidence that gratitude has reached your hands. Generosity can become a form of spiritual resistance against greed. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Giving reminds the heart that possession is not the same as purpose. What God places in your hand may be intended to move through your hand to someone else. Praise makes that movement joyful rather than frightening.
