Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established — Proverbs 16:3 (KJV)
Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” This week connects worship with work, learning and stewardship because these areas consume much of our waking life. When work is disconnected from God, success can become an idol and failure can become an identity. Worship provides a different agenda. You can work hard because diligence matters, but you do not need work to prove that you have value. You can learn seriously because wisdom matters, but you do not need knowledge to make you superior to others.
Stewardship means handling what is entrusted to you with care. Time, money, skills, technology, opportunities and relationships all require stewardship. Praise reminds you that these are gifts and responsibilities rather than possessions that give you ultimate identity. This also makes room for excellence. Worship is not an excuse for poor work. If anything, recognising God as the One you serve should make honesty and quality more important. The Christian who cuts corners to make money quickly is not demonstrating the freedom of worship; he is allowing money to become a master. At the same time, stewardship includes rest. A person who works without limits may be trusting their own effort more than they realise. Wisdom includes knowing when to stop, recover and return.
Commit the work, then do the work. Pray, plan, learn, improve, serve and review. Worship does not replace practical intelligence. It gives practical intelligence a proper Lord. Proverbs 16:3 places work under God's lordship. Psalm 90:17 adds, “establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” The prayer recognises both human effort and God's establishment. Learning fits here too. Proverbs 18:15 says, “The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.” Christians should not fear learning. Wisdom seeks truth.
Stewardship then asks what happens after knowledge and opportunity arrive. Luke 12:48 says, “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” Greater resources bring greater responsibility. This means success should increase responsibility, not merely consumption. If God gives you more skill, use it. If He gives you more money, steward it. If He gives you influence, use it responsibly. If He gives you knowledge, let it become service. Worship keeps success from becoming self-worship. You can celebrate achievement while remembering the Giver.
Work hard, learn continuously and steward carefully. But keep the order: God first, then the gifts He has entrusted to you. Stewardship also includes preparing for future responsibility. Proverbs 6:6 says, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” Scripture honours foresight. Worship therefore does not make planning unnecessary. It makes planning accountable to God. Prepare diligently, but remember that preparation is stewardship, not control of the future.
